What is CMC?
- Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) is any form of communication or interaction between two or more people via separate computers through network connection.
- Any communication patterns mediated through a computer.
CMC in education
- Started in the late 1980s and 1990s with the introduction of Communicative CALL.
- Became widespread with the use of Email and Forums.
- Internet Chat Rooms in the mid 1990s allowed direct communications.
- Is implemented for long-distance teaching/learning
- Recent increase in popularity of e-tutoring through forums and video conferencing.
CMC and long distance learning
- No distance barrier
- Mitigates time as a barrier
- Makes collaborations much easier
- Social influences and detriments are reduced or eliminated
Disanvantages
- Inhibitions related to the use of technology
- Problems with access to technology
- Lack of socio-emotional and nonverbal cues
- Lack of real human contact
